How fit must you be to enjoy the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
To trek, it is important to be relatively fit and in good physical condition before you start the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Before arriving in Peru, a few weeks of training will enhance your experience, and take some tours around Cuzco or walk uphill on Cuzco Mountains. Try to spend an hour a day on the road. Walk upstairs rather than taking the elevator, walk or cycle when you usually drive or ride a bus, or take the dog for a walk around the neighborhood. Better yet, go on hikes in your area.
Being able to run a few miles / Kilometers each day without issues is the best single physical activity you should consider. We also heard the advice to spend time on the stepper; we can't argue. While training, you can also break in those new trekking boots that may otherwise give you blisters on the first day of the trail (be careful). Arriving in Cusco City, PERU, a few days early is also highly recommended. High altitudes affect everybody differently; even a marathon runner may feel weakened. When in Cusco, visit some ruins in the surroundings, and have a little jog; you will probably notice heavy breathing. This is due to the thin air at altitude, not your lack of fitness.
After a day or two of acclimatization, you will learn how much food your body can handle, whether coca leaves tea helps, or if acetazolamide is appropriate (tablets). Difficulty degree of this hike: Moderate/Challenging due to the altitude: we recommend at least 2 days for acclimatization in Cusco or over 3000 m / 9840 ft.
Who can do the Inca Trail?

We recommend being in good shape without being athletic. Walks are made in a low rhythm and small groups, so you can stop to take a break for a moment. Don't forget that this Trek goes up to 4200 meters of altitude "second-day hike." That's why we don't recommend it to people with respiratory, circulatory, or cardiac problems. In any case, only your doctor will tell you if you are able or not to do the Trek. We recommend you see a physician if you have any doubts.
